Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
137 PM PDT Tue Apr 15 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Warmer weather continues through Wednesday with snowmelt
resulting in streams running fast and cold.

* Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible through mid-
week with isolated areas of heavy rainfall possible, especially
  on Wednesday.

* A cold front brings light mountain snow, more thunderstorms,
gusty winds, and cooler weather Thursday and Friday before a
warming and drying trend returns Easter weekend.

.DISCUSSION...

High temperatures today continue to stay 15-20 degrees above
normal, however, we`re entering a slight cooling trend. Active
weather this week will allow for temperatures to drop back to near
normal before a high pressure system this weekend brings
temperatures back up to above normal across the area.

A couple showers are starting to pop up south of the Tahoe Basin
this afternoon, primarily in Alpine and Douglas counties. Showers
and thunderstorms will progress north through this afternoon,
impacting Sierra front and Tahoe Basin communities through sunset.
Thunderstorm and lightning potential is greater along the higher
elevations; Sierra front communities will likely only experience
rain showers today.

As a closed low off the coast of California moves inland tomorrow,
we receive an increase in moisture. This will allow for more
showers and thunderstorms to develop (20-40% chance). A low
pressure system in Canada drops down Thursday, combining with the
California closed low. Chances for showers and thunderstorms
increase Thursday (30-60% chance) with snow showers possible as
well. Snow levels will range between 4-5 kft however any
accumulations will be light and constrained to Mono county. That
low dropping down will also bring increased winds, primarily for W
NV and Mineral county with gusts up to 40 mph.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions continue through 16/12Z. There may be a few periods
of MVFR conditions in the Sierra due to -TSRA between 15/21Z-16/03Z.
The chance of storms is 15-30% in the aforementioned area. Some
showers may extend into adjacent areas in western NV (10-20%),
impacting Sierra front terminals for the same time frame. Winds
will be generally from the E/SE with occasional gusts up to 30 kts
from erratic outflows. Similar conditions expected Wednesday but chances
for widespread showers and thunderstorms increases.
